Blog #27
In this article, “does your social class determine your online social network”? A recent Nielsen study finds class differences between online social networks, Breeanna Hare talks about how the different Internet website determines your social class. Hare talks about how MySpace users tend to be in the middle class, blue -collar neighborhood. And FaceBook goes off the charts in the upscale suburbs. Also Hare goes even further and discusses the income bracket of each website, MySpace user’s income range from 50,000 or less and FaceBook users earn 100,000 and more. Wealthier people are more likely to use FaceBook; and the less affluent, are MySpace Users.
Writer Hare research each website and provided the sources such as market research firm Nielsen Claritas, danah boyd, and Editor-in-chief Adam Ostow. The research is a reliable and current source to a certain extend. Recently more MySpace users have been switching to FaceBook. Not because the amount of income a person has, but the level of maturity of a person. The research Hare has is objective, Hare spoke with several sources and each source had their on opinion. The writer Breeanna Hare has well documented facts on MySpace and FaceBook, but Hare is not qualified on the subject. Hare has chosen a popular source; she has a lot of research in her article from several different researchers but has not exactly done studies of here own.

blog#26 What Thanksgiving Means to me..
The older you get the more you realize Thanksgiving is not just about the food and stuffing yourself until you can't breath. In today's society we have a lot to be thankful for. Over the last few years our economy has been on the down fall people losing there jobs, and there homes and not being able to have the Thanksgiving they had two or five years ago. Most people cherish what they have now because it can be taken away from them. Be thankful for what you have now and realize your situation can be worse off, there is someone out there that don't know where there next meal is coming from. My husband complains about being over worked and not being paid enough. And I have told him that there is someone out there wish they can be over worked for any pay, so stop complaining and go to work, because were better off than most.
So you ask the the question what does Thanksgiving mean to me. It means exactly what the word says "THANKSGIVING". Being thankful for what you do have and appreciate the things that are in front of you. there is someone out there that don't know where they are going to sleep tonight, let alone there next meal. And giving, give something that you have to someone less fortunate than you . Help someone in need this year. Have you heard the expression give to someone and you get your blessing in return doubled what you gave out. I heard that a lot growing up as a preachers daughter. SO this year for thanksgiving be thankful that you have a roof over your head,a job to go to everyday and food on your table. Give back to your community or one person that will not be able to share Thanksgiving with there family this. And Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Blog #25 Reflect On class experience 11/13/09
I also listen to other essays and gave feedback on there papers.I notice a lot of things in other essays that I was corrected on in my tutoring session, like using the word you, or using first person. I also gave advice on thesis which I think I got a good understanding of in my tutoring recession so I hope I can help someone else out. I think that wraps up everything we completed in class today so now I can go back and get ready to turn my final draft in. Oh, I also learned that the essay is six sentences or more so now I have to go back and figure away to add at least one sentence to each paragraph. Wow! that's going to be hard.

Blog#24 Writing Center Experience
But anyway, After having to wait for someone they finally found a tutor for me, Sela. I have worked with her before and I think she is a great tutor. Sela read my paper aloud and marked things as we went along to discuss afterwards. She ask me what things that I feel I need to work on and we will start their. So I told her I had a problem with punctuation and grammar. Sela said that overall I have a good paper and that I was correct about needing help on my punctuation. Sela also said that was her problem in college punctuation she would write a great paper but suck at punctuation and get marked off for it, which I do too.
So after going over the paper Sela helped out with my punctuation, she also took out some extra words that she said was not needed. We also went over verbs and nouns and when to use them. She exactly help me out a lot. and taught me a lot about punctuation, but I am not a English major so I know my paper is not going to be perfect or without error, but I do try my best in all my essay to make an A, and with each essay I learn something new. Sela also said that my thesis was good and straight to the point.
Going to the writing center was an advantage this time around, seeing that it started out pretty rocky. But the overall experience was good and educating.
after the initial shock of not being in the system. so now it is time to go back to the drawing board and edit my paper and get it ready for the final copy.
Blog #23 Assignment on 11/06//09
Defeating the Odds
I attend San Antonio College because I am a thirty soon to be thirty- one year old, African American, and I think that I am a very intelligent young woman, but I have not accomplished anything in my life. I have tried going to college on three different occasions and I have not gotten far. Over the last few months I have set down to reevaluate some things in my life, and going back to school was first on my list. My mother has a bachelor’s in business and my father is a few months away from a PHD in biblical studies. I said to myself there is not any reason why I should not have a degree; I come from an educated family.
This time around my college experience is exciting, and I am motivated to come to class and do homework. I am more focused on what I want because I see the things that I could have had by now. Those days when I wake up, and hit the snooze button, and say to myself” I will go tomorrow.” Then I think about all the things that I should have already accomplished in my life, also my husband yelling in my ear about the money he paid. So my reasons for college and accomplishing is encouraged by the people around me and, me telling myself you should have already been in this position.

Blog #21 Dana Boyd learning connection
Back to the video we watch on Dana Boyd learning conference, she spoke on today’s technology and how it affects today's world. Which I do agree, but I think it should be taught in all schools because, it is part of today's world and technology is used in everyday things. Most kids these days would rather stay inside on a computer than be outside playing. She spoke about the use of cell phones and how kids are so dependent on them. And the parents make kids dependant on them I think. They are so busy in their life they give their kids cell phones to keep in contact with them.
During the video we also were pulled to the side by Mrs. Crawford and discuss our last writing assignment the descriptive essay. overall I did pretty good on the essay I received a seventy out of eighty points on my assignment which was better than the last essay. She told me I need to proofread my paper a little more before I turn it in. Which I thought I did that, but now I know what I need to work my editing skills. I need to learn more about punctuation and sentence fragments when I am writing my papers. But that is what school is all about, doing better, improving yourself. Well I think I have summarized everything we went over in class today. And I have a headache so its bedtime now :-}

Blog# 20 Reflect on class experience
We also talked about how to correct some of the simple mistakes from previous essays things such as, the font of the paper double space and in dents. Also don't use the word you in your paper. and stay away from contractions words such as don't isn't and so on. We also talked about where you should put your thesis in the topic sentence or conclusion sentence. And when you begin your essay make sure not to confuse your reader if you start talking about facebook always start all the topics starting with facebook so that the audience want get confuse about which website your talking about, We also received a work sheet to help us to keep focus of our topics which, in this type of essay you need to write down what each paragraph is about, and that should help get through this essay.
Blog #19 Writing lab experience
I had already both a my space page and face book. All that needed to be done was to befriend the writing center. Even though I had both pages I never have set down and thought about what they had in common and what they do not have in common. So I begin to explore each page and wrote down some differences and similarities between the two websites.
My space and face book have a lot of different things two totally different websites. So I think I will be going with the contrast part of the essay. There is alot more differences than similarities. A few of them or, my space you can decorate your page back ground, download music for your page background and just jazz it up mainly this website is for the teenagers. Face book I think is for the older generation. It's more catching up and chatting for people you haven't seen in a while and seeing old class mates and what they are doing in present times.
I don't want to get into to much detail about the essay. I will save it for my assignment so that I can have something to write about. But by reviewing both websites, I think contrast can give me more to write about. I think there are more differences, and I can go into more details, pulling out the difference in each website. So this will be a to be continue blog must read essay.
Bog #18 My group presentation
There were also to commercial attached to this assignment. One of the commercials was about a women, an average looking women and just gives her a complete makeover. What I got out of the video was, a little makeup can make anybody look like a model they have flaws to. Television has such a big influence on today's society. On how they should look. But my opinion you are who you are. we all were created differently. That's why kids need something created to do and a little less television.
The article I spoke about was focus on plastic surgery. One part of this article talked about, the number of men seeking cosmetic correction has increased my 35% in the past two years. They cite professional image and job marketability as the reason for smoothing creases or trimming jowls. Explain Doctor Melvyn Dinner, directer of the center of plastic in Cleveland. It also talked about improving one's look surgically has been made easier. Quick procedures Can be done on an outpatient basis and require a short recovery period.
Reflecting back on the videos and articles, a study showed the average women size is a fourteen, So those women in the music videos, models, and anyone in the spotlight are just as normal as the average looking women. A little makeup and extra camera touch up, you can look just like those models. But that's not the part they advertise.

Blog #17
My space and face book has become addictions in today's society. The article compares the two websites to a drug addictions. Network junkies, count the minutes til there next profile fixing. Which I thought that was hilarious, because I really feel that way when I'm on face book, I try to log off but for some reason I just can't log off. According to Hit wise as of last week my space domain is one of the most visited amongst U.S. Internet users. Meanwhile , Face book has been increasing steadily, taking the position of the ninth most popular domain.
Colleges scan facebook during admission, was the next article that I was interested in. colleges admission officers are viewing students online facebook pages before final acceptances in college. That means a face book picture from a weekend party can cost a student a spot on a premier campus. Mark D. Weinstein stated "I believe most colleges will do whatever it takes to recruit the right type of students to their respective institution.
Well I exactly made it through this blog, I don't think that week break from writing was a good idea for me. But I talked about some interesting statics about face book, and myspace. I also talked a little about how colleges scan facebook for students that they see fit for admission. I talked more about myspace and facebook, it was a little more exciting than college scans.

Pandora And LastFM
these are Internet radio stations. It was a great day in class, after working hard on an essay and getting it in on time. It felt good to go to the computer lab and listen to some music surf around on it, and just took a break today. But I'm sure its a motivate or five page essay behind this relaxed day, just to good to be true.
Pandora you have to sign in and join, which its free. After logging on you can type in a song or an artist of a song and it will give you a play list of that artist songs and similar artist with the same type of music style. You can skip through it, but it only allows you to skip through so many an hour or create a new play list. It also allows you to judge the songs, if they are played to much, and other options.
Between the two, I think I like Pandora. Lastfm I had a hard time just logging on, when signing up with Lastfm you have to use your e-mail address, then go into your e-mail to confirm your membership, Pandora you choose a user name and password and your in. Lastfm shows the videos of most of there songs. I tried to log on to the videos and they kept cutting out. LastFm is a busy site and I am a simple person, I just want to get to the point, and Pandora is very simple and to the point.
Its good to have discovered these website, especially for a college student. You can plug your head phones into your computer and listen to music while you write your paper or just listen while on the Internet. Both websites are pretty cool to play around with and get the fill on which one fits your computer experience. But my opinion if you like a busy website go for lastFM. But if your a get to the point type of person go for Pandora. Both websites are fun to play around with in your spare time. But college students don't have a lot of spare time.

Reflecting On my Writing center Experience
In my tutoring session we sat at the computer, and she read my paper out loud. We worked one paragraph at a time, after reading paragraph one, she told me I needed to focus on the person that I am talking about, I need to use him,he or she, more, or the persons name so the reader will know who you are talking about. But she told me the description of the character is good she can picture the comedian.
Well, I am not going to sit here and go paragraph to paragraph, this essay has six paragraphs and if I go through every paragraph my blog will be as long as my essay. Basically through out my essay she told me the same thing, I describe the scenes well, I need to let the reader know who I am talking about. She help me a little on my grammar, and I know I suck at it. I have a lot of quotes in my essay so she help me with, when I can use quotation marks. The thing that I like about the tutoring sessions is that they tell you the truth about your paper, and let you know if your on the right path, and if your not, they help you get their, They give you ideas to get you going in the right direction.
I would not have done anything different with my sessions. The two tutors help me out and gave me good feedback on things I need to work on. She also told me I needed at a little more to my ending and give my opinion on the video which was good advice, because I did not know how to end my essay. Overall I was really impress with her feedback, now I will see if I listen to her feedback correctly in my final grade.

Reflecting On today's assignment 10/05/09
I also had a few comments on my blogs. I received good feedback and some opinions to improve my blogs in the future which was good. I even had one post where she said, she was glad she read my blog it will help here start here descriptive essay paper, she didn't know where to start it. That was good, I was able to help someone out. Blogs can be hard; I don't know if it’s the blog are the length requirement of the blog that makes it complicated. But having feedback and reading other people blogs helped me out on making the blogs longer.

Reflection On Today's Descriptive Essay 10/02/09
We created a timeline in class and that was the best idea for this assignment. You really need a time line to help you put your paper together. In the time line you have your beginning, middle and end. In the beginning, you should start your paper with the time and date, then introducing the people in your video, what you see, and what’s going on. You should use your five senses, touch, hear, smell, feel, and taste. And if you use these methods you should have no problems starting your essay.
The middle of your paper should be paragraphs, two, three, and four, so I figure I will take one minute out of my six minute vlog and write a paragraph for each minute, to have five complete paragraphs. In the middle part of your essay just discuss what’s going on, and repeat your five sense in each paragraph, tell the persons emotions, the back ground noises what you see in their back ground to ensure you have five full sentences. Be detailed about the vlog and you will create a successful essay with no problems. Your ending you should take the last minute of your vlog and capture everything that person is saying and summarizes what you have already talked about. Again your five senses are very important in the conclusions also.
We broke into a group of two and took the timeline method and started brain storming our vlogs which helped out a lot getting an opinion from another person on how to go about writing your vlog. And with the person you are paired with you discuss your vlog and what it was about and write it down from beginning to end. So now that you have a timeline you can use that as a guide throughout your essay.

Vlog
A vlog is a audio version of a blog. It's another form of communication is today's world. People use vlog to express them self, are just acting crazy, I don't think I could do a vlog, I would be so nervous to post myself online and have no control over who watches it. I never heard of a vlog until this assignment. Our essay is to pick a vlog and write a descriptive narrative about the vlog. So I was looking through the vlogs trying to determine what blog to choose to make this assignment as easy as possible, and honestly I don't think its an easy way to go on this. So I told myself the next vlog I clicked on I was going to use it for my essay, and here is the link to that last click. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKI38Mi2jlg
When I clicked on the link the first thing I notice was how long it was. The video is six minutes long so that should give me enough to write about, plus it has a few more vlogs attached to it. The vlog is on Brent Butt, that last name said it all. He is a comedian on television show, and his network suggested that he start a vlog to reach out to his fans. He's wierd so he might just give me something to talk about. I'm not going to go into to much details about him I will save that for the essay seeing that its going to be five or more paragraphs long.
I think I might have lucked up, and found a good vlog to write about, but it always seems to be going well until I go see the tutor and find out I'm going in the wrong direction with it. tomorrow in class I will get a better understanding of the essay and decide if I want to stick with this vlog I picked, or choose another one. But for now here is where my essay stands.

Anthropological
They talk about how people communicate from different countries through you tube, and how millions of people use you tube. What I found interested was the study they did and how you tube videos get just as much rating or views, just as a TV, sitcom, I thought that was very interesting information. And with all the reality shows out now, I see why people like watching you tube. You tube is another source of communication in today’s technology world, its interesting to see the different cultures communicating through you tube.
People also take other videos edit them and make there on versions of it, which some of them are pretty funny. The video were the big brother sticks his finger in his little brother’s mouth, that has hilarious (Ouch Charlie that hurts), to funny. And Soulja Boy became a Grammy nominee from one of his first hit songs, and it started from the world of you tube, it was remixed over and over and a record label discovered him, pretty cool; Now he’s famous in the world of hip hop. I started browsing you tube after I watched the video people advertising there kids on you tube trying to get them famous. And let me tell you, every parent think they kids can sing, but it’s not true.
As I stated I really thought this was a very entertaining assignment it keep me laughing and educated me on the world of you tube. You can get educational information, comedy, or people who think there kids have talent, and really weird people also, but its entertaining ad will keep you busy for hours.

Difference between Blog#3 and E-mail Etiquette Essay
The fake e-mail blog was a little bit more simple. First of all it was a blog, and not an essay. Blogs are more of your opinions, or feelings about a certain topic. So it usually flows out better without much thought put into it. Secondly when you e-mail a friend about a bad grade it was more of you are venting, you can tell your friend how much you hate that class, how you think the teacher is not teaching, and just your true feelings about the class, It's about your emotions .
Versus e-mail etiquette where as I stated took me thirty- minutes just to get it started, and after writing it, I had to rewrite after seeking advice on it. In this essay you have to plead your case on why you think the instructor should reconsider your grade. And you would need to do this with less emotions as possible, and in a respectable manner. Also try to stay away from words like, your, you, mine, and so on. It doesn't sound complex, but after discussing it in class and getting a tutor I wrote my paper four times. The essay had a two page guideline, were the blogs only guidelines are no text language or street slang. I've been working on my paper for over a week trying to get it right, (which I still think its not right but that's the reason for the class to teach me to get it right.) Where on my blogs, I just go with the flow of it.
Blogs, that's what they are. They are your thoughts, feelings, and opinions. My opinion is, its easier to write a blog because the only guidelines or no slang and no text language. So when writing my blogs I'm really just saying what's on my mind and giving my opinion on each subject, its more like free writing to me. There is not a lot of thought put into your blogs. Its also easier to vent to a friend, than writing a letter of reconsideration of a grade to a instructor. With a friend you can say whats really on your mind, but with your instructor you want to watch what you say.

Reflecting On today's workshop Blog #9
Today in class we did a group activity about our writing assignment E-mail Etiquette. We broke up into groups and read aloud our assignments and gave feedback on each person. Each person essay was different and every one had different opinion and good feedback on each paper.
When reading my essay and listening to feedback in class I learned my paper had lots of personal emotion to it. In the outlines it explain about the use of personal emotions in the essay, the e-mail is more complex than what it seems. When your not use to writing everyday its hard not to use; (me, you, no, your) and meeting the length requirements of six sentences and at least three paragraph of such a simple topic. When I first set down to write my paper it took me thirty minutes just to think of the first paragraph, I see what writers mean when they have writers block I was stuck on the one paragraph and didn't know where to go with it.
So after discussing the papers most of the member in my group had met with the tutor and had a lot of good feedback. I met with the tutor after class and sitting with someone one on one help me to realize what I was doing wrong, she explain to me that its a paper that is asking for reconsideration of a grade, and the instructor does not care about your personal feelings, you need to plead your case. Why you failed, what was different from the last assignment that was so different about this assignment. She explain to me, I need to plead my case, as if I was a lawyer pleading my case to a jury, so after talking with her she pointed my problems out.
I'm going to take another shot at my paper and rewrite the entire paper to see if I really understood what the tutor explain to me, she also told me if my paper was suppose to have lots of emotion to it, I would have done a great job on it but I need to focus on pleading my case and stating the facts. So I'm going back to the drawing board for round two of Email Etiquette.

Summary of articles on Sept 18, 2009
When reading the article about eharmony I looked at both point of views the writer John Cloud was upset that they didn't have the option when logging in, man seeking man or women seeking women. The only options were men seeking women and women seeking men, but the founder of eharmony Neil Warren describe as a conservative christian said, We've done research on about five thousand married people, but never same sex. So we don't know how to do that, and he thinks the principles probably are different, and since same-sex marriage is illegal is most states, they don't advertise it since the web site is focus on marriage. John Cloud the writer also stated, there are plenty web- sites focus on same-sex relationships.
Internet dating also was a big discussion in class today, everyone had there different opinions on the subject and also shared some of there experience with Internet dating. There are several dating web-sites, you have web-sites were people are looking for long-term relationships, and you have web-sites for one night stands. My opinion in today's world you really can't trust people, and I watch to many lifetime movies so Internet dating wouldn't be my first option. I prefer the old fashion way, but that's the new thing going on. I know a few people who meet there spouses online and so far things are working out with each of them. But with my luck I would have met that one psycho path in the whole bunch, thank god I'm already married.

Blog # 7 today's class discussion
When writing the email you should consider a few things: Email format, double spacing, white paper, black ink, and times Roman Numeral. also no slang, text language, and language also describe as street language. Mrs. Crawford also wanted the class to focus on the audience, what purpose will the audience have on reading the assignment, now that's the easy part of the assignment.
The paragraphs have to at least be six sentences, and two to three well developed paragraphs, this is getting in to the more complicated things. Thinking of so many paragraphs for such a simple topic can be very complex. But I'm sure I will figure it out some how, I usually do. Things are getting a little better for me, the more I write, and writing blogs help me out a lot with get familiar with the writing process.
Our class is being taught to elaborate on sentences, instead of just saying the house is green, go in to detail about the house, the house on 1919 North Main street is the only green house in the neighborhood. I will be referring back to my book for information to help me through this assignment. but I think it will be okay. We are starting to get a little more challenge on our writing skills, I need to work more on when is the proper time to add my comas, and periods.
This essay will be a good challenge for me to get back into writing more. The rough draft is due on Monday, and we are suppose to see a tutor before we turn it in, and all slots or filled, so this is not good, I hate not having things done on time, but I will have my rough draft ready for class anyway.

Summary of Articles on Sept 11, 09
The first article I would like to discuss is, should schools be wired to the Internet, and my answer to this question is yes. Everything today is web base, meaning if kids in today's world don't use the Internet they would be lost, everything today is focus on the Internet, job applications, college school enrollment, financial aid applications and so on. In today's world if you don't know your way around the Internet, not to many jobs are not going to hire you. So every school should have some type of computer class.
The second article was, how to bring our schools out of the 20Th century. I have two opinions about this article, first off I think that all schools should be provided the same education rich or poor, it is not the child's fault he or she was born to a family that could not provide as much as the next family. Money donated to schools should be shared equally amongst the school system. Secondly from my experience some of the 20Th century ways should be left alone, I notice some students can't even add, subtract, or multiply. Because they are taught to use a calculator. Back in the day you where taught without the use of a calculator so you actually learn how to add or multiply. And now there are audio books that definitely shouldn't be used in a classroom (if your not blind), if you have the eyes to read, pick up a book and read it.
In these two articles I can see both the pros and cons in each topic, I think every school should have an computer class, because that is what our world is surrounded by today, but I also think we need to keep some of the old fashion ways like doing math on your hands, or your head, or reading out loud just to know that our kids are actually learning the material being presented to them.

Summary of Todays Articles
classroom use. I know every one has different opinions on each of theses topics and I would like to share my opinion on each of these topics.I would like to start with texting, John Sutherland wrote that texting is bleak, bald, sad shorthand which masks dyslexia, poor spelling and mental laziness. I totally disagree with this Author. I think it helps out with today's generation. even though it might be shorthand sometimes, its teaching today's generation how to write and read. Its a form of communication, and it helps this generation on there spelling also, because most kids if they are like me they are going to read over there text so they want sound dumb before sending it out, so it helps them to proofread and form sentences.
Also we discussed the use of IPhone in the schools, Abilene Christian University's gave there freshman's T-shirts, iPhone, or ipod touch. Schools say the devices will pep up class discussions and give students quick access to important information like local maps, and calendars. My opinion is a little different on this topic, I think texting is okay, but its a time and place for everything. I think it will be a distraction during lecture, yes they say its attended for classroom use, but be honest, if you have a phone in front of you do you really think your mind will be focus on what the attended use is for. If your like me your going to check e-mails, face book, and my space accounts.
So that my opinion and today's technology in the classroom and outside of the classroom, everyone in class today had a different outlook on these two subjects and that is what made this so interesting to me.

Reflecting ON Today's Discussion
We have a lot of writing in this class that could be overwhelming, but that's college life. We also received a tentative schedule, versus the syllabus where it gives you a break down of your grade and how you will be graded. The tentative gives you a break down when your assignments are due, it tells you when your presentations, blogs and how many words needed for each blog, writing assignments, and etc. are due. That also helps out a lot. I think it teaches you self discipline and how to manage your time better.
The group presentation is a good idea versus where I have to get in front of the class and talk by myself its hard for some people to get in front of people and speak, and that some people includes me. and the group activity also teaches you responsibility, You have to think of the other people in your group and how by you not doing your part will effect the group from getting extra points, cause in the end those extra points could help a classmate out.
I think this class will be a challenge for me, but with a lot of hard work and a little prayer, I might be able to make it through this class. It seems overwhelming to me right now, but I think in the back of my head, it will all pay off for me when I get my degree.
